From Dec. 1998 through May 2008, I implanted over 115 patients with an ankle prosthesis. The patients came to Miami from 12 states, Ecuador, and Costa Rica, were 15-83 years old, and weighed 110-375 pounds when implanted. They were in Miami for 2-3 days and the post operative care was done in their home city.

This prosthesis became available to Americans in October of 1998.

This procedure is specifically for individuals with severe ankle pain from either Rheumatoid Arthritis or Arthritis from a previously broken ankle. In addition, in most cases a patient who has had their ankle fused may have the fusion removed and replaced with a functioning ankle joint; the Buechel-Pappas total ankle prosthesis.
